Insurance Firms Merge
Two London insurance veterans are joining forces. Sutherland Elliott Insurance combines the talents of Jim Sutherland, who has been in the business since 1972, and David Elliott, who started in 1983.
The new merged firm recently held the grand opening of its newly renovated building at 17 York St., just west of Copp’s Buildall. Sutherland said the merger of the two agencies just made sense
“It makes us stronger, the volume is better,” he said.
Sutherland used to have an office at Central Ave. and Maitland St. and wanted to stay downtown. The building on York St. is leased from Copp’s and offers plenty of parking.
Sutherland Elliott Insurance has 12 staff and offers a variety of insurance products and retirement planning, including RRSPs and mutual funds.

History J.C. Sutherland Insurance Brokers
In 1947 John Crawford Sutherland left being Principal of Thorndale Elementary School. He needed increased income for his family and took the position of Clerk Treasurer for West Nissouri Township and started J.C. Sutherland Insurance to sell insurance in the evenings. He held the position of Clerk/Treasurer until his retirement in 1981. He sold life insurance for North American Life and Home & Automobile insurance for the Dominion of Canada and Zurich Insurance. All 3 companies opened their offices on Saturday mornings so that all the part-time insurance people in London & area could deliver applications, pick-up policies, endorsements and meet with an underwriter.
In 1972 his son James Sutherland joined the insurance business and in 1974 J.C. Sutherland Insurance Brokers was incorporated. As the demands as Clerk/Treasurer had grown, Crawford Sutherland reduced his involvement in the insurance business.
J.C. Sutherland Insurance Brokers went on to purchase Highland Insurance, Graham Milson Insurance and Aaron Richmond Insurance. In 2011 J.C. Sutherland Insurance Brokers and David J. Elliott Insurance Brokers formed Sutherland Elliott Insurance Brokers.
