Important reminders: Ontario snowstorms

Winter snowstorms are hitting hard—are you prepared?

The recent snowfall across Ontario is another reminder of the havoc weather events can cause for customers and their properties. With back-to-back storms and plummeting temperatures, the risk to properties may increase. That’s why we wanted to share a couple of important reminders about snow clearing and the claims process to help customers prevent damage and stay safe.

Winter weather hazard reminders

Two of the most common types of winter claims we see are from frozen pipes and roof collapses. As we know large snow accumulation can be overwhelming for many, we urge you to talk to your customers about some of the proactive preventative measures they can take that can help mitigate the impact of this winter season:

  • Inspect roof.
Please remind customers to keep an eye on snow and ice accumulation on their roof and strongly encourage them to contact a professional contractor to help with safe removal. This is particularly important for older properties where build-up can have severe consequences, especially if the temperature changes and it starts to melt.

  • Check exterior of property.
Excess snow can put pressure on the whole exterior of a property. Overloaded gutters, downspouts, windows, etc. can all be impacted. Clearing any build-up can help alleviate unwanted pressure.

  • Check for ice dam formations.
The freeze-thaw cycle can create ice dams that block water drainage in pipes. It’s important that customers remove excess snow before ice dams form to protect their properties from potential water damage and losses.

  • Keep driveways and sidewalks clear.
Excess snow accumulation can create hazardous and icy conditions around properties. Customers should be advised to shovel early and often to reduce the risk of falls and slips.

Please note: It’s also important to remove snow from all windows and exhaust pipes as build-up can result in water leaks and/or further damage once it melts or even create a safety risk.
